Speed Painting - The Quick Sketch Workshop
Paint Faster. See More Clearly. Say More with Less.
What if you could make better painting decisions—and make them faster?
In this two-day studio workshop, David Lussier will teach you how to simplify what you see, quickly identify the essential shapes and values, and translate them into confident, expressive paintings.
Through a series of timed painting exercises, you’ll learn to trust your first impressions, eliminate unnecessary detail, and capture the essence of your subject before overthinking takes over.
David will begin with a demonstration of his quick-sketch method, showing you how to use negative space, large shape relationships, and value masses to establish a painting quickly and effectively. You’ll then put those principles into practice through a series of small, timed paintings.
As you work, David and Pam will provide individual guidance and visual cues to help you make stronger decisions. After each sketch, the paintings will be displayed for a brief critique and discussion. Seeing the progression from one painting to the next is one of the most rewarding parts of the workshop—and often reveals just how much can be accomplished when you stop trying to make every painting perfect.
This workshop is about more than painting quickly.
It’s about learning to see, simplifying your thinking, and becoming more decisive with your brush.
You’ll discover how to:
Paint with greater spontaneity and confidence
Quickly establish strong shapes and value relationships
Use negative space to improve composition
Simplify complex subjects into their essential elements
Make decisions without getting bogged down in detail
Develop stronger visual memory
Develop your own short-hand and expressive brushwork
Say more with less
Whether you’re an experienced painter or looking to break out of a cautious, overly deliberate approach, this workshop will challenge you in a supportive and energetic environment.
Many participants leave with something more valuable than a stack of small paintings—they leave with a renewed confidence in their ability to see and paint.
There is a wonderful energy in the room as everyone works against the clock, learns from one another, and watches their paintings evolve throughout the weekend.
The Two-Day Experience
