Developing a More Personal Approach to Color
IN-PERSON STUDIO WORKSHOP
Rollinsford, New Hampshire
Join David and Pam in their indoor painting studio at Salmon Falls Mills in Rollinsford, NH, for an immersive, hands-on exploration of color. Work alongside David and other painters through demonstrations, discussion, and individual painting exercises.
What if you stopped trying to reproduce the colors you see and started discovering the colors you really want to paint?
Color is one of the most powerful tools we have as painters, yet we often spend so much time learning to identify, mix, and reproduce the colors in front of us that we overlook the opportunity to make something much more personal.
In this workshop, David Lussier explores a different approach to color: one that begins with observation but moves beyond it. The goal is to develop a more personal relationship with color, learning to interpret what we see rather than simply copy it.
Drawing from decades of painting experience and an ongoing exploration of color, David will share the ideas and discoveries that have shaped his own approach. His studies of Denman Ross's color theories, H.G. Maratta's palette systems, and the paintings of George Bellows and John Fulton Folinsbee have all contributed to his evolving understanding of color. Early influences, including Emile Gruppe, also helped shape his appreciation for expressive, vibrant color.
But this isn't about adopting someone else's palette or following a rigid color system. It's about understanding the underlying relationships that make color work and learning how to adapt those relationships to your own artistic intentions.
Working from individual photographic references, students will explore how to let the subject influence their palette without becoming confined by its literal colors. We'll look at opportunities to push color, shift temperatures, exaggerate relationships, and make bolder statements while maintaining a sense of harmony and logic throughout the painting. Rather than searching for the correct colors, we'll focus on discovering the possibilities within a subject and learning how to make those colors our own.
Perhaps most importantly, we'll explore how structure and intuition can work together. A deeper understanding of color relationships can actually give you more freedom, allowing you to make spontaneous decisions with greater confidence and purpose.
The objective isn't simply to use more color. It's to make more meaningful color decisions.
Whether you're looking to overcome uncertainty with color or are already comfortable with it and want to take your paintings further, this workshop offers an opportunity to challenge familiar habits, expand your thinking, and develop a more individual approach to color.
Come prepared to look at color differently!
