Nationally recognized contemporary impressionist artist David Lussier of Connecticut captured the poetry and majesty of Oakmont in the official commemorative painting for the 116th US Open Golf championship. At 5 p.m., the eighteenth hole was bathed in this beautiful afternoon light, the long shadows felt absolutely perfect and the combination of light and shadow really drew me in. The clubhouse was also being bathed in this perfect light and the moving clouds just added to the overall composition.”

I caught something very personal and special in the painting. It feels like a type of portrait.

Being able to capture on canvas the very essence of where players make the turn, and where they finish their round gave clarity to my decision to paint this
— David Lussier

I visited Erin Hills for a number of days and found the magic of the place enthralling. It was very windy, and I watched as the light changed throughout the day, the clouds coming and going, moving rapidly through the expanse of the course. I saw this view of the 9th hole and it immediately felt special. Viewing this short par 3 from above with the 18th hole beyond was where I felt the magic. Being able to capture on canvas the very essence of where players make the turn, and where they finish their round gave clarity to my decision to paint this. With more of Erin Hills sprawling expanse viewed in the background and the large, low-lying clouds being bathed in warm glow of sunlight, it added to the depth and charm that is uniquley Erin Hills.
